It was as if the winds in Morocco
were whispering my name
it arrived to my ears
carried through the dust from the sand
dunes
on the backs of each speck
placed inside pages of magazines
over conversations with strangers
within menus at restaurants
on the labels of clothing
and in the lovers I met…
My yearning to travel to Morocco was
created during my time working for the home decor store Bowring.
Saffron stained Tagines and Marrakech inspired
dishware would arrive regularly to the store. I would admire the beautiful
designs on the saucers, cups and plates and think to myself, “these remind me
of the intricate henna designs Indian women get on their hands and feet at
weddings”. I was drawn by the fact the beautiful designs reminded me so much of
my own culture.
My curiosity of what the country and people
might look like led me to searching Morocco up on google.
Through my search online, I discovered
vibrant spices stacked high in cone shapes, bright coloured clothing that
flowed like evening gowns to the floor, buildings that made me think of architecture
in a whole new way, fiery orange and yellow sunsets over ochre pigmented
deserts, homes in Chefchaouen painted in every shade of blue, and the list of
my discovery of Morocco’s beauty goes on. I was hooked. I needed a taste of
Morocco. I promised myself to travel there someday.
This promise was made sometime in the year
2007.
Now 10 years later in 2016, I am solo
travelling to the Kingdom of Morocco.
